The basic armour types are as follows:
Leather: soft leather with modest protective qualities.
Quilt: layers of fabric stuffed with wool, providing excellent protection against blunt damage and modest protection against other weapons.
Cuirbouilli: called kurbul in HarnMaster, this is hardened, waxed leather, formed into plates and used for spot protection.
Mail: metal rings linked together to form strong protective garments. Almost always worn over quilt.
Scale: metal scales attached to a leather backing. Cheaper and slightly more protective than mail, but far heavier.
Plate: solid metal plates, used for spot protection. Very expensive.
Here is a cost listing, along with weight, in pounds, and coverage from HM3, which I have translated mostly 1:1 into FutureMUD's coverage system.
