The Misty Isle is a text-based online roleplaying game which uses the HârnWorld setting - a low fantasy world inspired by 12th century Britain. For those familiar with the terms, it is part-MUSH and part-MUD. Rather than describe the terms in detail here, I refer those curious to this excellent outline of what a MUSH is by the creator of the Ares MUSH engine: aresmush.com/mush-101
The Misty Isle uses the FutureMUD engine by Luke Cunningham, details of which can be found at www.labmud.com/
I have provided a brief overview of the setting at themistyisle.boards.net/thread/2/introduction-overview-rn.
The Misty Isle aims to have a mix of political intrigue and adventure. Players will take on the role of a range of characters, from powerful rulers to mendicant preachers, and wealthy merchants to daring adventurers.
The game has an episodic format. Each episode will be a time-limited story which focuses on one particular location in the world. I anticipate that an episode should take two to six months to complete. For each episode, players may apply to play either a character of their own creation or one of an existing cast of characters from the region. For more detail, please see themistyisle.boards.net/thread/9/episodic-structure.
The game features conflict between player characters. I understand that this is not to everybody's tastes and in certain respects the game can be considered quite experimental. I hope that the episodic nature and the fact that most players will not be able to carry characters forward from one episode to the next will ameliorate the typical problems arising with such games. Note that coded combat is not an option without a GM enabling it and is, in any event, unlikely to be an appropriate recourse for player characters in many situations. For further detail on conflict, please see themistyisle.boards.net/thread/11/conflict-player-characters.
For those players who prefer to develop a character over a longer period of time, the option exists to play characters with reasons to travel and no strong connection to any one region. These characters may be continued from episode to episode. These are detailed more fully at themistyisle.boards.net/thread/10/character-cast-tiers.
An announcement regarding the first episode can be found at themistyisle.boards.net/thread/29/episode-1-opening-announcement
